Flag, Irish National Volunteers, Limerick Branch, period 1913 - 1916. Made at Good Shepherd Convent, Limerick? Scene: A rising sun with nine rays, a shield bearing the Treaty Stone, King Johns Castle behind, superimposed in applique in top l. corner. The backing cloth is a dark blue silk damask with a repeated pattern, very slightly raised, in black, of a classical foliate motif. Below, centre, is a half sun of concentric bands of different shades of red and yellow. The rays expand from the sun to the edges of the flag, each ray bordered in white, with layered bands of flame within, in yellow and buff, smaller flames in red-brown between the tongues of flame at the top of each layer. The gaps between the layers form arcs concentric with the sun. All this is embroidered in heavy gague silk thread. The Treaty Stone, on its pedestal, the steps of which are cut through by the broad black shield edge, is in shades of grey outlined in black on a reddish brown background. The castle, across the pedestal behind, is grey and blue-grey, outlined in black. The shield is heavy gague silk thread embroidered on its own coarse white backing. The flag has a narrow border on three sides, of embroidered black inside, then an applied heavy silk band, reddish brown, with a repeated pattern in yellow of double circles, an expanded arm cross within each circle, and squares, the squares formed of a half cross above and below a central line. Outside this is a border of white silk braid. On the l. side are four pole attachments, loops of dark blue silk bands, with, above, a stop for the top of the pole, and a loop, a continuation of the border, to hold the stop in place. R/ of flag of a similar material to the front backing, in pale green, with foliate pattern, slightly raised, of a heart shape within foliate sprays.
