Flag, National Volunteers, Limerick City Branch, period 1913 - 1916, made at Good Shepherd Convent, Limerick. Pale blue cotton and silk thread fabric, the vertical cotton threads forming a corduroy effect. Scene: Limerick city arms with motto on scroll below, in applique, the fabric of loosely woven thick silk threads. The castle is in shades of grey, with blue entrance on green ground, the outlines in black, the cross above yellow, all on a red shield with black outline. The motto is in yellow lettering on white, the scroll with black outline. Above, in embroidered Irish lettering, in yellow: National Volunteers, a dash in red between; below: Limerick City Regiment, the first and last words curved, a red losenge after each word. The border on three sides is a band, with a red field, on which is a repeated pattern of two spiralled shamrocks in yellow, and a cross within four arcs, the meeting of the arcs outwardly angled, the arms of the cross with circular endings and the centre of the cross a diamond shape in yellow, with four diamonds outside in red. The band is edged in yellow bearing green circles. All patterns are outlined in black. On the outside of the band is yellow cotton braid. The fourth edge has five pole attachments, loops of yellow silk, each with a central applied band, red on white, with an embroidered repeated pattern of a cross in losenge in the centre of four pointed leaves, an oak leaf to each side, a line of red dots above and below. Below the lowest pole attachment is a loop (broken), similar, but narrower, to the pole attachment bands. The back of the flag is of the same material as the front, plain, stained and holed in places. Rubber stamped R/ bottom l. corner, on garter: From Good Shepherd Convent, and within garter: Limerick.
