Auger. Shell auger, used to bore holes in the shell of a ship framework for insertion of metal bolts. Consists of an iron rod with a wooden crutch handle. The lower end of the rod is a hollow semi-cylinder with a boring bit on the end. Above this it is lozenge sectioned, twisted to square section below the handle. At the top it splays to form a horizontal socket, with external central rib, the socket one piece with the rod, without a join. The handle is a cylinder of wood.
