Axe / chopper roughout, stone. Grey and black shale?, patinated brown where flaked. Trapezoidal in outline, convex at the broad end, broken straight at the narrow end. Rectangular with one pointed end in cross-section. One edge is naturally almost straight and flat, with a natural longtitudinal groove towards the narrow end. The other edge is gently convex, sharp, saw-like, deeply flaked on both faces. The convex end has small steep flakes removed on one face, larger flakes, one deep, removed from the other, giving an overhang effect. The faces are rough and flat, the natural stone surface; on one face, flaking has split off a layer varying from 0.5 to 4.0cm deep along the flaked edge and the ends. The remainder of this layer appears to have been detached and glued back on. Neolithic.
