Freedom box, Limerick silver, by Joseph Johns. Circular box with separate, shallowly domed, lid. Lid engraved with the arms of Limerick; a gateway with portcullis open between two towers, with gable behind on which is a flagstaff flying a pennant. Base inscribed "The Freedom of the/ Corporation of Limerick/ Granted the 29th. Sept 1789 to/ George Shea Esqr./ Native of this Town in Testimony/ of his Honorable & Upright Conduct/ in the Service of the Honble. the/ East India Company/ Revd. Thos. Ellison/ Port". Maker's marks struck once in centre of lid and bottom of box, both on the inside; a lion rampant in a shield with the letter I to each side of lion.
