H. to top of lid handle 19.1, to top of lid 16.5, diameter of rim 11.2, of base 12.9-13. wt. 851.5
Tankard, Limerick silver, scroll handle with lid attached at top of handle. Makers marks, a six pointed star in side a quatrefoil, struck twice either side of the initials "I P" in a rectangle, date c 1695. The marks are to the right of the handle, below the rim, and are incorporated into a heavy Rococo ornament of scroll and floral pattern which has been added c 1750. The ornament is restricted to a wide band below the rim and another above the base, but both come together at front where there is a field with monogram initials, possibly P S R. The lid decoration lacks the floral element except for a central boss and is otherwise restricted to scroll decoration. Scratched into the base is 31=00, both figures followed by symbols not on the keyboard, one like a circle with two horns with one horn much longer than the other, and the other mark like a reverse C. Two possible indicators of repair; the bottom end of the handle projects fractionally below the base of the tankard; a small green spot at the base of the lid handle, suggests the presence of non sterling metal in the solder.
