,
Sketch, pen and ink, with partial watercolour wash; framed. Title may be under framing. Depicts Famine and Emigration; in the lower half is a dark despondent scene in which two men carry a corpse between a high cross and a ruined abbey towards a cart on which are piled several bodies, another man has just put a body on the cart and a fourth is whipping the horse into motion; even the horse looks dejected with head lowered as it heads towards the graveyard depicted at right by a series of gravestones; the upper part is the contrast of light and hope, with a man at the rail of a ship looking towards the light depicted by the American Eagle clutching the stars and stripes shield in a sunburst. The eagle and sunburst are pasted on. In the upper part of the sketch are pencil lines, not fully ribbed out, showing lay out lines and even two figures who have been removed. In the upper part of the drawing are several dimensions and other instructions. Drawn on white paper. Frame simple stained wood, with glass front and hardboard backing; framed by Chris Doswell whose white sticker is at the bottom of the reverse; wired for hanging.
