Hot water bottle, ceramic, stoneware. Doulton & Co, Lambeth Pottery, London, for Goodwin & Co, Chinaware Rooms, Limerick. Bottle-shaped with a faceted D- cross section, designed to lie on the flat of the D. Circular and flat at one end, faceted to the body. Rounded shoulder at the other end, with a mushroom shaped handle at the end, with three concentric ribs around a low boss on top. Screw-in ceramic stopper with rubber ring seal on the centre of the body on the curved side, the socket sloping up from the body. The top of the stopper is disc shaped, with milled edge, and is inscribed on the top, impressed, with the manufacturers name and address. Ornament and inscriptions on the body are transfer printed. Around the stopper socket a star-centred floral pattern incorporating fleur-de-lis. On each side, longitudinally, on a concave scroll, the curved back ends with a spade (cards suit) motif, the title and manufacturers name and address. Above the stopper, to be read with the bottle standing on the flat end, in an oval with heart-shaped ends and wave centred long sides, an inscription of the Limerick firm's name and address.
