Clock, long case, by John Purcell, Limerick c 1800. Mahogany veneer on oak. Hood; triangular pediment broken above an below, with, in the centre, a short upright flanked by half circle hollows. Reeded columns to each side of the square arched dial door, the columns supporting the expanded top of the hood. The top below the pediment is outlined in honey coloured inlay. Trunk; short door with domed top, a quarter reeded column on the corners of the trunk from the base of the door to the top of the trunk; narrow inlaid rectangle at top of the trunk, broad rectangle with internally rounded corners at bottom of trunk; two keyholes cut in door. Base, almost square, outlined with inlay with internally rounded corners;expanded foot with flat base. Dial, enamelled iron, the face outlined with a circle, the spandrels painted with flowers in gold; Roman numerals in black, 15, 30, 45, 60 outside the 3, 6, 9 and 12 respectively; the minute positions marked with a circle of dots outside the numerals, the hour positions having 4 dots around a central one. Brass openwork minute and hour hands, the hour with lotus and large crescent surmounted with a sword; the minute hand is broken off. The second hand is between the numeral 12 and the other hands; its central support circular, the back a circle in a crescent, the front, a sword broken off towards the top. The second positions shown by a circle of dots each tenth one surrounded by four dots. The arch has a painted scene of two greyhounds facing right chasing a hare, trees behind, yellow grass. Maker's name "Jno. Purcell/ Limerick" on lower half of face in black. "Scott" written in pencil beside numeral 8. Two wind holes close to centre. Circular lead and brass pendulum on an iron rod. Cylindrical iron weights. Brass face of pendulum inscribed "Scott" twice, in ink. Two keys with, one crank type with brass socket and iron handle, the other, iron, a tapered socket on an oval bow.
