Painting: Charles A Mills A.R.H.A. "View of Castle of Limerick and part of the City from the Distillery, 1865". Oil on board. Foreground: Rocky river edge, low water, rocks jutting above water in river; to left, two men in a rowing boat, one holding an oar as a rudder, the other leaning over the bow holding a net in the water; to right a man and a woman in a red shawl standing on a small spit of land putting things in a basket between them; to their right is a donkey hitched to a barrel cart, a funnel on top of the barrel; to the right behind the spit of land, the stern of a wooden ship juts into the river; trees behind. Centre ground; a view of the city, to extreme left the tower of St. Munchin's, then, a three storey stone building behind the tollhouse, the castle with the tower of St. Mary's between two towers and red chimney also behind castle, riverside buildings to right of castle, seven spans of Thomond Bridge with rowing boat sized vessel with one mast, in front of the bridge. Blue sky with patches of white cloud. Wide gilt frame. Title and date inscribed in pencil on the back of the board, visible through cut-out in framing back-board. White sticker on reverse, printed in black with black ms additions.
