Chair, hall chair by Joseph P Lynch, Bedford Row, Limerick. c. 1900. Mahogany. The forward face of the upright back is carved in the form of a pelican in its piety, the wings forming a lyre shaped outline, the neck looping around forming an openwork handle at the top, the beak opened on the breast, with ovate openings between the wings and the neck. Three fledglings crane upwards to the breast. Below them is an oval knob, to each side of which is a fish curving downwards and outwards, a floral spiral emerging from their mouths, all forming a base to the scene. Below this is a short round-ended pedestal to the seat. The rear of the back is plain, flat. The seat is lyre shaped, widest at the front, on plain-footed cabriole legs at the front, and plain backward curving square legs at the back. There is a slightly recessed collar around the chair below the seat, the tops of the legs dividing it into panels. The underside of the seat is stamped four times J.P. Lynch / Limerick.
