Membership certificate, ornate, framed, Limerick Branch of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, Machinists, Millwrights, Smiths and Pattern Makers, constituted a branch on 18 Oct 1845, signed William Allan, general secretary. Lithographed scene: classical building with open front showing work scenes in six rooms on two stories: phoenix in round arch above centre rooms. Pedestal on roof with, in centre, angel standing on cornucopia, dove with olive sprig above head, arms outstretched holding a wreath above the heads of two workmen standing on the lower steps of the pedestal, workman to r. accepting a scroll from a robed female, workman to l. refusing a broken sword from a Roman soldier, soldier and female standing on roof of building. On r. corner of building, male in classical dress, kneeling on one knee, breaking fasces with other knee. On l. corner of building, similar figure breaking a stick. On face of pedestal, three busts in ovals formed of birds head with other end of oval in mouth, centre in classical dress and wigged, the other two in dress, one to r. wigged. To l. of building, train passing under bridge, industrial buildings in background. To r. of building, timbers stacked on shore, paddle steamer on sea, rowboat coming ashore. Scroll across base of building inscribed: Be United and Industrious. Bunch of roses, thistle and shamrock above cert script. Seal of executive council in red wax below. James Sharples invt. Plain gilt frame in broad dark stained frame. Long sides of frame stamped Sandeman.
