Print, Punch cartoon, The Battle of Limerick, 1848. View shows William Smith O'Brien as a dog, named on the collar, being ridden by John Mitchell as a monkey, named on the browband of a jesters cap, with dagger on belt, and figure beyond holding large sword under armpit titled on back, meagher of the Sword, all fleeing to l. from a mob of peasants armed with pikes, one with an old rifle, hurling stones and a kettle at them, an effigy labelled Mitchell aloft on a pike, a smiling policeman to one side with hand raised in a restraining gesture, a building behind with label 'Moral Force'. A line of smiling soldiers blocks a side street to l., a woman and child observe from a first floor window of the corner house. Initialled bu the artist bottom l. of print, J L. Space between edge of view and double rectangle border, title inside border below. Handwritten in pencil bottom r., 1848. R/ blank apart from p2 at centre bottom. With .0601, which has volume no. XIV.
