Lease, printed and ms. on paper. Indenture; lease of three houses in W. Watergate by George Evans of Wilton Crescent Middlesex and John Evans, Chudleigh, Devonshire to Patrick Bowles, grocer, of Broad St., dated 5th November 1840. Single sheet with man stock phrases and paragraphs printed in with spaces to be filled out by hand. "Printed by Order of the Honorable/ the Commissioners of Stamps- 1840" at top left to left of first word; Royal coat of arms in a crowned garter, surrounded by the initial "T". The three houses late held by John Carroll and Thomas Duggan, bounded by Bowles' own house, Scabby? Lane to W., Mr. Russel's store on south. At bottom right a dumb-bell shaped piece of paper with red squares in centre of ends, to right of lessors' signatures, and single circular piece to right of lessee's. Witnessed by Edward Carter and Robert Withers in Portsmouth, William Pitt, John Barrett, Edward Melling Beauchamp and Matt. McNamara. Embossing at top left; "Ireland" over a crown, flanked by "A" and a harp, over "Fifteen? Shillings". Circular black rubber stamp "4/ Pence". Watermark on paper Fleur-de-lis over shield over "WS". Paper folded in half twice latitudinally, then both ends to middle and then in half. Annotated with contents on outside, with name George Gloster at bottom right.
