Helmet, cloth and bronze. Limerick City Artillery. 1881-1901 Pattern officer's home service blue cloth helmet. High rounded crown in 4 sections of cloth, with short pointed metal edged peak and short rounded neck guard. At centre top is a four armed fitting, with air holes at top with a knop rising from the centre in the form of a ball held in five leaves; the arm of the fitting pointing to the rear has a hook at the end and a metal strip runs from below this arm down the helmet to the centre of the neck guard, and turning up on the inside to stop at the top of the guard. On the front of the helmet is a metal badge, showing the Royal Arms with lion and unicorn supporters and a lion crest, with motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" and "Dieu et mon droit", all over a cannon with "Militia Artillery". At the sides are two metal fittings with hooks to receive the chinstrap. The chinstrap consists of a series of interlocking bronze rings set onto a strip of black cloth, with one loose ring at either end to fit to the hook on the helmet. The inside of the helmet has a red leather sweat band, and a blue-green leather lining to the inside of the peak and neck guard. A red silk lining was fastened around the upper edge of the sweatband but is now mostly loose. Above the silk is brown cloth and silk lining. At centre top is a circular ventilator giving out to the holes on the fitting at centre of the outside. It is in the form of a four spoked wheel, with threaded centre to take the screw down central knop. Around this piece is a circle of red leather with inscription "J. Haslett/ Woolwich". The helmet is accompanied by its original tin box 1999.0238.1.
