Axehead, flat, bronze. Harbison Type Ballyvalley, No 938. Thin narrow rounded butt, hammered. Sides slightly convex in section, diverge slightly on the butt half before swinging out gently and with a short splay to the bevelled, slightly convex, cutting edge. The splay extremity is damaged on one side. The faces are slightly concave in cross-section, giving a low flanged effect. The thickest point is 4.1cm below the butt, and it thins evenly from this point towards the butt and cutting edge. Each face is faintly decorated with broad shallow grooves running parallel to the sides, with a central broad shallow Y-shaped groove, the divided end towards the cutting edge. This decoration runs from the butt to the bevel on one face. The other face is worn towards the butt, but there are faint indications that the decoration ran to the butt here also. FRNO 309. EBA L. 14.3; W. cutting edge 7.8, butt 2.7; T. max 0.8; Wt. Glenamaddy / Galway handwritten in yellow ink on one face
