Montage; "Design for Diorama: "Departure of the Irish Army under General Patrick Sarsfield, Earl of Lucan, from Limerick A.D. 169-"; by Thomas Ryan A.N.C.A., A.R.H.A; March 1965; framed. Shows a central group of four men with flag, red cross on white field with crowned harp at centre; to the right the city walls, in black, in the background, with squad of blue uniformed pikemen drawn up under the walls, with Royal Standard; in foreground a mother hugs her drummer-boy son, while a monk/friar gives the central group a blessing and two bewigged men look on beneath two flags; the one has a red hand on a white field and "Pro rege et patria pugno" around it; the other diagonal blue and red stripes, with crowned harp at centre and crown at top right with "Tout D'en Haut" around it. To the left of the central group are four sailing ships on the river with the castle and Thomond Bridge in the distance; a rowing boat flying the French flag of three fleurs -de-lis is approaching the shore and a man with a wooden chest on his shoulders is loading it onto a boat. The city walls and all the figures are stuck onto a painted background, those in the foreground are raised on polystyrene to give the effect of depth. Signed twice by artist; at bottom to right "Thomas Ryan, 1965" and on boat approaching shore "Thomas Ryan,/ 28 February/ 1965". Plain brown stained wood frame with grey card mount around; hardboard back, sealed with brown paper, with white framer's label of Chris Doswell; title of piece in black ink on card in artists hand, attached to back board. Wired for hanging.
