View shows the street, looking north from just south of the Royal George Hotel; two files of traffic moving along the street in each direction, buses parked outside Todd's, many pedestrians moving along the pavements, and one man is standing in the middle of the road in centre foreground. Reverse is printed in grey, with some red; at bottom left is a red rectangle with an outline map of Ireland with a grey dot over Limerick and a grey arrow pointing to it; to the right a text reads "O'Connell Street, Limerick City: The city/ of Limerick stands on the site of an important ford of/ ancient times, where the Shannon River meets the sea./ It is one of the most progressive of Irish cities, an/ important transport and industrial centre. The history/ of Limerick dates from the middle of the ninth century, when the Danes made a settlement here.
