Railway lamp, iron, brass and glass. Brass plaque on side reads "Knocklong 1". Two main parts to it. Body is a sheet iron cylinder with a hinged door on one side in the centre of which is a glass fronted circular projection, with a brass ring holding the cracked glass in place. The door is hinged at one side; the edge of the door is rolled back on itself and a wire pivot inserted down the hole, passing through two similarly rolled pieces soldered to the body. There is a similar closing arrangement on the other side, but the pin is arranged to slide up and down to lock. The handle is affixed opposite the door; two parallel vertical pieces are welded to the body a short distance apart and the handle affixed to these, leaving a vertical rectangular channel. In this channel is a vertical brass spring with thumb catch, which has a projection which closes over the second main piece. The base has c 20 small air holes through it. The second piece is another sheet metal cylinder which fits down inside the sleeve of the body, three circular holes are cut into this, two are open, and the third has a curved pane of green glass,(by analogy with LM1990.172 a red pane is missing). The lid is surmounted by a louvre of two circular pieces separated at three points by metal projections. A plain flat loop handle rises from this. The base of the body has an upright projection onto which the oil lamp should slide but the lamp is missing. The metal of the front projection has been partially scrubbed with a wire brush.
