Clock, longcase; by H.L. Stewart, Limerick. White dial with black markings. Minutes and hours on large dial, seconds on smaller separate dial. Larger dial has an outer ring of two concentric lines with radial minute markings, triangles at every 5 minutes otherwise lines. Inside this ring, hours marked in Roman numerals I-XII. Central pivot for hour and minute hands, with two keyhole slightly below the mid line, one either side. Second hand between pivot and 12 o'clock; concentric outer rings with radial markings between; longer lines at 5, 15, 25, 35 etc.; Arabic numerals 10, 20, 30 etc. Hour and minute hands in the form of leaf-shaped spears, both held to pivot by small bar passing through a hole through the pivot. Second hand; a plain pointer, with slightly wider short projection at back; held to pivot by friction? Flat glass front to round head. Surround to glass; an inner and outer quadripartite wooden ring with glass sandwiched between; visible face of the inner ring painted gold; single hinge at top, brass with three countersunk screws in each leaf, one leaf stamped "Hodges Patent Lockjoint". Carved spandrels either side between round head and case; carving of four nuts/berries set against two leaves. Case narrowing slightly to head, with round topped glass panels in front and sides, held in place on inside by beading. Door at front runs full length from head to pedestal and full width; two hinges at right, brass with 3 countersunk screws in each leaf; brass lock at left, with keyhole at side; modern replacement key. Corners of case chamfered with carved brackets, foliage decoration, dowelled to the chamfers top and bottom. Glass panels front and side have beading surrounds. Brass cylindrical pendulum weight suspended on a wooden rod; threaded iron bar attached, somehow (not visible), to end of wooden rod for adjustment of pendulum. Two identically sized weights; cylindrical brass casing with brass hook on top, both filled with lead from the under-side.(Both over 5kg limit of office scales). Each weight hooked to iron loops attached to the axis of a brass pulley wheel. Left wheel runs on white waxed thread; right wheel on modern monofilament fishing line, replacing original thread. Between the weights and below the pendulum is an iron cup-hook screwed into the back of the case. Pedestal section; reverse ogee in outline with long vertical bar to the S. Skirting board round the base, with four short legs at the corner on the inside of the skirting on which the clock stands. Rectangular panel at centre front, with beading surround. Pedestal section is veneered. Whole case stained and polished. Crank key for winding; socket head; all in brass except for wooden lathe turned handle on metal axis. End of socket stamped "14". Two short lengths of wood with the clock, having uncertain function, but possibly used for propping open the head which hinges upwards. (Key in 1990 Box 2)
