Lamp, oil lamp, copper alloy. Cylindrical body with conical base and domed top. Internally threaded raised opening in centre of top, also double (folded) heavy wire carrying / suspension hook hinged by tubes of metal over its separated ends, attached near edge of top. Small wire hook and one link of chain attached to end of large hook. Top attached to body by folding of flange over everted flange on body. Body has a paired ridge and depression top and bottom (also one on base). Cylindrical base attached by overlapping of flange over bottom of body. Base comes to spout - like point with inserted cylindrical tube with externally screw threaded end. The body, base and threaded tube are all made out of single flat pieces of metal, folded into the required shapes. The joints of each are all in a straight line. In centre of body, a copper alloy plaque, rounded lobate ends and pointed centre, rivet at each end, inscribed JAS. MURPHY. / 10. Below, stamped into body, R.H. MELLOR & SONS. / "OWL" / OLDHAM. Golden finish remains on parts of lamp surface.
