Collet, gold, Late Medieval. An ornamental mount, consisting of a thin circular strip of gold with overlapping ends with, applied on the outside, an ornamental layer, narrowing in diameter from the bottom to the top, where the inner strip extends for 1.5mm above the ornamental layer. The overlap is crude, with a slight gap on the ornamental layer, the cut end of which forms a slight step. The inner overlap is 8mm from the cut outer end, and the ornament under the overlap appears to have been hammered flat, with a pincer mark at the junction with the outer overlap. The ornament consists of, around the centre and each side, a milled or twisted wire forming a rope pattern, with, in the gaps between, a central low plain rib between sets of two wires twisted together, forming a herringbone pattern in each gap. The wires can be seen in cross- section at the overlap. Shadows of the ornament appear on the inside.
