Axe, hammer, iron, Early Christian 7-9th century. Vertical oval eye with rounded lugs forming circular cheeks. Long narrow wedge blade, slightly downward angled, widening gently from the cheeks and splaying slightly to the curved cutting edge. The hammer butt is slightly downward sloping, rectangular in cross section, with a flat hammer face. The axe thickens regularly from the cutting edge to the cheeks and narrows very slightly to the hammer. The edges are slightly faceted and the top edge of the blade slightly rounded. There are no traces of forging seams. Surface slightly pitted with some concretion on the lower edge of the blade. Prior to conservation some traces of wood in the eye.
