Watering can, brass, by Thomas Hassett, Limerick, early . Upright body, flattened oval in cross section, lidded, with a spout to the front and handles on the top and at the back opposite the spout. Body formed of one sheet with vertical seam on handle side. Base a flat oval with flanged edge, held by a tight fitting u-sectioned fold over of the body, giving a slight bevel above the base, at top of which is a shallow encircling groove. The rim of the top is similarly folded over and bevelled. The flat lid is in two parts, joined with a piano hinge behind centre, the smaller opening part to the back, to the back of which is a small rectangular bevel edged strap handle, held by a rivet at each end. The hinge is held to the front part of the of the lid with two nuts and bolts, the tops of the bolts rivet-like. The front part of the lid is turned over the rim of the body and held with solder. The handle across the centre of the top is a high u-shaped strap handle with bevelled edges, the edges turned to hold a strip on the underside. The angle between the lid and handle on each side has a half cone soldered on, and under the crest a rounded strip forms a finger grip. The handle is fixed with a rivet through U-shaped projections from the handle down the sides below the rim. The spout, emerging close to the rim, is in two parts soldered together, the first, conical, rising at an angle of c.45 degrees to just above the level of the rim, with a seam on its upper side, the second, set horizontally, is circular in cross section, tapering slightly to the mouth, which is bevelled and returned inwards. This section has the seam on the underside. The angle of join between the spout and body is filled with a taper-ended strip soldered to spout and body. The handle opposite is an ear shaped tapered strap, riveted below the rim and one third of the way down the body. The lower angle of join to the body is filled with a curved tapered strip. A hand hold is formed by a rounded strip set diagonally under the top of the handle, and a thumb hold by a strip bent to a u-shape on top. Under the base at the spout end is soldered a rectangular plate with raised border inscribed in relief: T. Hassett . Ironmonger / Limerick. The number 10 is engraved or stamped in the centre of the base, and the letter H similarly at the handle end of the base. Interior galvanised. Some rusting on base flange.
