Across bottom; King John's Castle, Limerick City/ Located on Kings Island by the banks f the Shannon River, the longest river in either England or ireland./ King John's castle is an impressive towered fortress founded in 1200. It was built on the site of a former/ Viking stronghold datin back to 922. This castle saw a tumultuous history, culminating in the famous/ sieges of the 17th century. The archaeology within the castle ranges from exavated pre-Norman house foundations to/ the remains of siege mines, perhaps the finest examples excavated of siege mines in all of Europe. Not used.
