Hat, bowler, with label of Cannock, Limerick. Black, dome centre with rim slightly upturned at the sides, with black hatband with knot at one side, the ends of the knot glued to hat. Brown leather sweatband, stitched with black thread along the outer edge only, is inscribed in gold on one side: All pure fur. Two labels attached to sweatband. At the front, stuck to back of band and extending beyond it, paper label printed in black within double line border: S2023 (partly overwritten in biro, 49/6) / (line) / crest, crowned garter around shield, the garter inscribed Walker Ashworth & Linney Ltd; to r. of crest: 7 3/8, the 8 blotted out with blue biro and 6 substituted. The second label, of pink paper, stuck behind r. side of sweatbend, printed: (on scroll) Be just and fear not / crest, a garter enclosing a shield inscribed Defence / not defiance, a cat lying at bottom of shield; above shield, lion and unicorn, each looking backwards, to each side of shamrock, rose and thistle on one stem, the garter inscribed Felt Hatters & Trimmers Union. Around garter, horizontal, This Hat / Union Made. Below garter, hands grasped, the sleeves inscribed A.J. F.H. and FHT&WF / (on scroll) Copyright. The sweatband is inkstamped to r. of this label: 3483. An oval label of plastic is glued to the inner top of the hat and printed in gold, a circle crossed by a band, Cannock & Co. / Ltd. / (on band) High Grade Hatters / (in circle below) Limerick.
