Inkstand of Gerald Griffin (1803-1840): carved walnut stand with cut glass ink bottle (2002.42.1). Square flat sheet, finely carved on the surface back three-quarters, to each side a long panel carved with series of eight flowers, each with five stems. between these nine squares, the central one a recess to take the ink bottle, the rest carved with floral geometric ornament. The front quarter has a polished surface with an oval concave recess to hold pens. The edges are conves with a step above and below. On the underside, a disc shaped foot is screwed onto each corner. A typed not is stuck on the underside, reading: Gerald Griffin's Inkstand / Gerald Griffin (1803 - 1840), author of The Collegians / and Aileen Aroon, died as a Christian brother in the / North Monastery, Cork. This much-used, walnut inkstand / belonged to him and remained with his family. His great- / great- grandniece, Niamhin Ni Griobhtha, O'Curry House, / Strand Line, Kilkee, gave it to Dermot Nolan, N.T., / Loughrea, who presented it to me in 1969. / St Brigid's, / Portumna.
