Collection object: Coat

Gentlemans suit, c.1760: Coat. White silk? fabric of thick threads, covered with vertical and diagonal lines of pile, the pile ornamented with a pattern of red dots with a short green line under each dot. The coat slopes away from the chest, where it is held by three hook and eye catches. There is a line of ten buttons along the length of the r. side, with matching long false buttonholes on the l. The tail is straight ended, divided. The sides of the tail are crimped, fan-like, with a division between the crimps on each side for a sword. The divisions are marked by three buttons. The neck is collarless. The cuffs have a moderate turn back, with three buttons on each. The pockets, at the waist, are broad, the pocket flaps ending in a pointed wave, with three buttons below each flap. The lining is of heavy white silk, muslin lining in the sleeves.
