Collection object: Surplice

Surplice, Limerick lace and linen?. White linen surplice with Limerick lace border around bottom and base of sleeves. Body of vestment open down c. two thirds of front, but closed at top by ribbon around throat; the ribbon continues around neckline and is embroidered in repeating foliage. The same design continues across the base of the yoke on both front and back and is also around the base of the linen part of the sleeve and the top of the hem on the main body. The lace trim is wavy edged with an "IHS" design at centre front and back, flanked by foliage design of bell flowers and vines., with stars infill. The arms are made from lengths of the same, with one complete and one partial IHS, with the lettering by the seam, in order to show the foliage. The inside neck has "Presentation Limerick" in black ink on a sewn in label. There are some small holes in the lace trim of the body.
